Teacher Training | ECT Self-Study
Programme Pattern
Each topic in the Behaviour module follows the pattern below:
A 10-minute video shows what some of the key early career framework (ECF) ideas in the module look like in practice
A 15-minute evidence summary provides an overview of key research to read relating to the key ECF ideas in the topic
15 minutes of quiz and reflection enable you to check your understanding and consider the evidence in light of your knowledge and experiences
Weekly instructional coaching that draws on this material and tailors the weekly focus to your specific context and needs, including the needs of your pupils, with built-in opportunities for practice. This is the main part of the mentoring process
You’ll notice that as each module progresses, topics will often touch on previously learned content. This is intentional and a crucial aspect of your learning experience. Some concepts on the programme are so important that they need to be revisited multiple times to ensure you develop a deep and durable understanding.
Module 1: Behaviour
Autumn Term Self-Study
Welcome to the Behaviour strand of the programme.
In this module you will cover:
how to establish an effective learning environment
how to effectively manage behaviour
the importance of holding and promoting high expectations for all pupils
Module 2: Instruction
Spring Term Self-Study
Welcome to the Instruction strand of the programme.
In this module you will cover:
the link between effective instruction and pupil learning
the elements of explicit instruction and the ‘I-we-you’ model as a useful way of approaching this
how instruction can support more effective pupil thinking
Module 3: Subject
Summer Term Self-Study
Welcome to the Subject strand of the programme.
In this module you will cover:
the curriculum
their mental model of the subject or phase they teach and its implications for their planning
how to know what pupils have understood, the barriers teachers face in doing so and how to respond to the needs of pupils
Module Introduction
The module comprises topics sequenced to first explore the process of establishing an effective learning environment, before considering how to promote behaviours that support effective learning:
topic 1 explores the foundations of effective behaviour management.
topics 2 to 5 cover the process of laying the foundations of an effective learning environment.
topics 6 to 7 cover the process of maintaining an effective learning environment over time.
topics 8 to 11 explore more complex ideas around certain practices that can support more effective learning, incorporating and building on previous modules.
topic 12 explores how teachers continue to improve the learning environment over time.
Module Introduction
This module comprises 12 topics sequenced to work through the foundations of effective instruction, its elements and how they support effective pupil learning, and then considers more complex instructional approaches:
topic 1 explores the foundations of effective instruction
topics 2 to 4 cover the links between effective instruction and pupil learning
topics 5 to 7 cover the elements of effective instruction and their links to an explicit teaching approach
topics 8 to 12 explore more complex ideas around certain practices that can support even more effective learning, incorporating and building on previous topics
Module Introduction
In Instruction we asked you to explore some ‘rules of thumb’ of teaching. In Subject we will apply the same rules in more detail and look at how what you are teaching influences how you apply those rules – and when you might need to break them. As a result, this module covers multiple ideas around curriculum, planning and assessment. In the classroom, these ideas will lead to practices that all blend into each other.
However, to help you develop a clear understanding, this module begins with topics focused on curriculum and planning, before shifting to looking at assessment:
topic 1 explores the foundations of effective subject/phase teaching
topics 2 to 6 cover the process of effective planning in your subject/phase
topics 7 to 12 cover the process of effective assessment and how this can further enhance subject/phase teaching
